This project had my staging team and I sneaking out the back door of a Highgate apartment, while the agent who listed the property was bringing potential buyers in through the front door. We had tight deadlines to reach, and we did.
Was it worth it? Well, the house was sold 30 minutes later — so yes!
What was it about this ultramodern property that spoke to these buyers?
Interior design trends are taking a more eco-friendly approach as people move towards natural elements and warm tones. Decor elements made either from real or faux natural materials are in high demand, as they add a natural and authentic look to your space.
Maximalist interiors are spilling into 2022 interior design trends too. Clashing prints, bright colours and alluring articles are adorning homes all over. What began as a style statement to counter minimalism is now becoming one of the latest interior design trends. To work with maximalism, start with a statement decor feature — something like an array of cushions in various tones — before moving on to the furniture fixtures, wallpapers and paints.
Over the past few years, contemporary architecture has blended with modern elements that benefit society. Elements such as open floor plans, connection to nature, and a minimalist appearance have been increasingly popular since the pandemic. Mid-century modern design has been replaced by eclectic traditional nouveau design. This current interior design trend is inspired by older interior design trends like neoclassicism. It incorporates antique furniture pieces but with a futuristic twist. Imagine a regal, ornamental piece of furniture, but paired with current interior design trends like warm-coloured accents and monochromatic colour palettes. This can quickly get messy, but my background in architecture makes it so much easier to bring current trends into cohesion with older architecture.
A misconception that critics often have of modern architecture is that it’s cool and cold. While modern architecture may be linear, clean and uncluttered, there is definitely warmth to be found there too. Many modern designs feature elements that are naturally warm and inviting, such as wood and stone. Floor-to-ceiling stone fireplaces, large windows that let in natural light and vaulted post and beam ceilings— what could add more character and warmth than these wonderfully modern features? Also, most modern plans contain fewer walls, thereby creating a more welcoming, open living space that most people crave.

How to take advantage of ultramodern architecture and interior design features in your home
Ultramodern home designs continue to push the boundaries to seek new approaches to style and functionality. This includes eco-friendly features like green roofs, inner auditoriums, solar panels, etc. Ultramodern design values open spaces where energy can flow freely, and homeowners can move easily from the kitchen to the living area to the home office. Minimal home decor is favoured with modern furniture, modern materials and plenty of natural light.
Skylights and large, unornamented windows in different shapes characterise ultramodern house design. These features create open spaces and make these homes feel airy while still being fairly modest. Installing windows of intriguing sizes and shapes removes the limelight from artwork or busy wallpaper and sets the focus of a room on the natural surroundings. The natural sun fills the home with brightness and warmth, leaving the family feeling happier and connected to the world around them.
The ultramodern house does not capture passersby’s attention with colour, but rather by using unique architectural elements like angles, light and how spaces flow into one another.
