No matter how gorgeous your space might be, a home with stark bare walls often feels well, stark, and bare. It invokes a feeling of coldness and nobody wants their space to feel uninviting or worse, incomplete. From Claude Monet to Tunji Adeniyi-jones, there are vast amounts of artists and artworks you can pick from to display in your home. That’s good news for you, however it does beg the question, how do you go about selecting the perfect artwork for your space?
Well, the easy answer is to choose something you like. But, as we all know, in the world of art and interior design, not everything is always as cut and dry as simply choosing what you like. It is, however, the start.

It’s your space, and whether it’s for your bedroom, office or holiday home, your space should reflect you and art is a great way to do that. Although following trends are nice, remember art is meant to stand the test of time so whatever you choose will ultimately stay with you for the next few years.
Now, there are various rules and trips and tricks for selecting the right artwork depending on the space, for example in your bedroom your artwork should ideally be hung directly over the bed or on the opposite wall. It should be one large scale artwork composed of restful tones and hung at eye level.
While there are many such tips, and we could go on and on about the different rules for the different spaces, that’s a blog for another time.

For now, let’s talk about your wall space. Choosing the correct art size is of paramount importance. You need to know what type of real estate you’re working with before you even think about buying a piece of art. The general rule of thumb here is that if you have a large wall space, go for a large-scale artwork to anchor your space. If you have a small wall space get something smaller. Additionally, if you are thinking about doing a gallery wall, it’s important to lay it all out first and see what works for you. A good starting point is to select complementary styles and colours that fit the space.
The next point to consider is mixing and matching. Here we simply mean that an artwork doesn’t necessarily have to match the room it’s in. Traditional rooms need not have traditional art, and modern rooms need not have modern art. Mix it up, nine of ten times it often works out better for the space.
Take it slow. Preparation is key in all things especially when selecting art. Do your research on different art styles, artists and find something that speaks to you.
